Southern Tier Pumking Ale 12-oz. bottle of beer

The Pumking of pumpkin beers reviewed

Not without flaws, Southern Tier's Pumking Imperial Ale delivers a punch with pleasant pumpkin flavor.

Pumking is brewed by the Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood, New York. It’s a pumpkin imperial ale, and the second beer I’ve tried as part of my new mission to review and discover the best pumpkin beers.

It has a distinct pumpkin flavor but is more subdued than the earlier reviewed Sam Adams Jack-O Pumpkin Ale. The pumpkin flavor is evident, but the finish has a secondary alcoholic flavor that I attribute to the 8.6% ABV. This, in my opinion, takes away from the overall pleasant flavor. This beer packs a punch, but it only grazes on great flavor.

  • Imperial Ale ABV: 8.6%
  • Seasonal
  • Available in 12-oz Bottles, 500 ml Bottles, and On Tap
  • New York-Based Craft Brewery
