DuClaw 31 Pumpkin Spice Lager is a seasonal beer that was first brewed in 2008 as a one-time release for Halloween. Dark amber in color, I found it to be tasty, with a slightly bitter finish.

It is nicely spiced, thanks to the addition of pumpkin and spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It smells strongly of pumpkin and feels creamy in the mouth, both of which add to the overall taste experience. It strikes a nice balance between sweetness and spiciness, with neither overpowering the other. Bottom line: I found it to be a smooth, easy-drinking pumpkin beer.

Kona Big Wave has been my favorite beer since I first tasted it in the summer of 2022. I’ve never drank a more refreshing beer.

“It tastes like it was brewed with magic water.” All kidding aside, those were honestly my very first thoughts. My second thought was to take another swallow, and before I knew it, I had quickly finished my first bottle.

You don’t have to be a fan of tropical-inspired beers to love this beer. The beer is perfectly balanced. For me, it’s flawless. Nothing is overdone, and nothing is left out. It’s smooth to drink and has a clean, slightly fruity finish, leaving no bitterness on the tongue. The aftertaste of the Big Wave Golden Ale is, “simply leaving you wanting more.”

Now, if you’re reading this review, I don’t want you to go out looking for this beer with unrealistic expectations, thinking something magical will happen on your tongue. Or that it will blow your mind or something. I’m just saying that this is a damn good beer.

Both Big Wave and Kona Brewing Company’s Longboard Island Lager are regularly stocked in my refrigerator. Nothing beats Big Wave as my favorite dinner beer and general thirst quencher. The only time it’s not in my frig is when I want a change of pace. The fact is if I didn’t occasionally run out, I might not ever drink another beer.

Like First Takes Stephen A. Smith’s “A-List,” this list is fluid. However, this list is fluid, not because of indecision but mainly because there are a lot of pumpkin beers out there, and I haven’t tried them all. OK, there could be some shifting and a change of mind later, but as of January 16, 2024, this is the lay of the land.

Back in September 2022, I thought I’d get a head start on Halloween by reviewing some seasonal pumpkin-flavored beers. Initially a skeptic, I found myself on a three-month pumpkin beer odyssey that turned me into a believer. This fall, I’m practically gravitating toward every new store I encounter, eager to unearth the next great pumpkin brew.

The original plan was to focus solely on Samuel Adams Jack-O Pumpkin Ale. But, as is often the case with underestimated experiences, it planted a seed of curiosity that flourished over time. That led me to widen my sampling range, amassing a respectable collection of pumpkin beers over the course of time. You could say my palate has been thoroughly educated in this particular field.

While the ale may lose some points for a lingering, slightly bitter aftertaste, it’s definitely an enjoyable option for those who prefer their pumpkin ales on the lighter side. It’s a brew that engages the senses from sight to taste, making each sip an experience.

It is a good choice for those who want a darker, heartier take on autumn pumpkin beers.

Watered-down coffee and mechanical cappuccinos do not appeal to me, but to so many Americans, they do. I give the Harpoon Dunkin’ Pumpkin props for originality.

It’s evident. A distinct alcoholic note comes through, which might be jarring for some. Initially, I found it a tad overpowering. However, as I progressed through the can, perhaps influenced by the beer’s strength, my perspective shifted. Woodford Reserve’s touch, a personal favorite bourbon of mine, might be playing its part here. To put it simply, “You’re drinking a bourbon-spiked pumpkin beer; let it ride.”

In conclusion, Shipyard’s Smashed Pumpkin is a beer that commands attention. It’s a bold blend of flavors, craftsmanship, and a dash of bourbon bravado. A standout in a sea of pumpkin ales, it’s a beer experience that lingers, and for all the right reasons.

With most beers, I can write a review after a few sips. Things pop into my head. I know if it’s a good or bad beer right away. I usually have an idea of what I want to say by the time I finish a bottle or can.

I drank a 6-pack of Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale over a few days, each day wanting to get this review done, but nothing came to me. I gave it a few days off in case I was all pumpkined out, but still nothing inspired me. It’s like I had a beer block with the Smuttynose. For me, there is nothing to spin, good or bad.

I considered purchasing another six-pack to force-feed my thoughts, but instead chose to go on. The only thing I recall about this beer is that it was a little bitter with a pumpkin flavor. I guess I failed on this one. Nothing negative to say. Nothing enlightening. It’s simply a pumpkin beer.
